Project 3 from Speeches By Management Manual

What is preventing YOU (point) from completing your CTM? Did the dog eat your manual? Did you leave it on the Bus or in the Lunchroom? Seriously, let’s take a look at this most important TM award and discover the many benefits of each of you receiving this coveted award.

A CTM (the Competent Toastmaster Award) will give you the speaking and leadership skills they need to excel in their job or education. You will be more educated in public speaking that 90-95 percent of your peers, probably more. The CTM will also better prepare you for executing the advanced leadership positions within the club, as well as in the Area and District if you so choose.

Now for a couple of examples of former Toastmasters who became CTMs and along the way applied their skills for personal gain.

Benita Brooks was in the Miss Alabama-USA pageant. She used the CTM skills she learned to develop a professional contest stage presence. For additional practice, the club helped her with special table topics questions that simulated the interview part of the pageant. She won the state pageant and did very well in the National Miss USA pageant that followed.

Mark Russell was one of only 5 percent of all applicants to the prestigious Dartmouth Business School to be accepted. He used his CTM skills to organize his thoughts in to numerous essays he had to write and specifically, he practiced a mock school admission interview during Toastmasters.

Numerous other Toastmasters, often CTMs, have accredited TM for their work promotion or help in securing another job.

To receive the CTM award, each members must complete 10 speeches where the building blocks of public speaking are practiced - starting with a uncomplicated speech about yourself called the icebreaker and culminating in a final speech that pulls together all the building blocks. In between, you get to do exciting projects where you utilize the scope of the English language, adjust the pitch and volume of your voice (say while going from soft to loud), persuade us about an idea you are passionate about (show passion), and have fun practicing body language (use gestures).

Have you heard the phrase ‘Practice makes perfect."? This is very true for the TM. After you have had to develop, practice and deliver 10 speeches you will gain confidence and improve your skills each time. You are then ready to tackle the more advanced TM awards such and the Able Toastmaster (ATM) and the Competent Leader (CL).

Did you know that very few Toastmasters who join a local club ever achieve the CTM award. There have been only 15 CTMs in the 13 year history if the INGR TM club. There are exciting time in our club. Not only do we have several new members starting toward their CTM, but we have about half a dozen members right now who are within striking (slap hands) range of their CTM. TM INTL really encourages members to get the CTM award because they know it will eventually lead to a stronger more healthy club.

Remember we are all in Toastmasters together gaining experience as a group as we encourage each other to excellence in all endeavors of life. Go out and complete your CTM as soon as possible to help yourself and to help your club
